The Stationery and Printing Department a 192 years old department evolved from a small press with 10 Employees was established on 17th December 1831, at Fort Saint George, Madras for printing Gazettes of Madras Presidency.
The Department of Stationery and Printing Cater to the Print needs of all the Government Departments and Public undertaking through the following units. They are
The Department of Stationery and Printing functions with 1460 employees inclusive of 231 differently abled employees and out of which 538 are women employees and 922 are men employees.
The Apex body of the department is the Commissionerate and it functions with 194 Officers / Ministerial staff and other staff.
The Government Central Press is located in an extent of 5.5 acre land in Vallalar Nagar of Greater Chennai Corporation functions in a 2 storied building with a carpet area of 1,25,000 square feet in 3 shifts, and managed by two Works Managers. Budget and Top Secret Sections of this press functions incessantly on all days including Government Holidays with 617 employees. This press is equipped with the latest machine and upgraded technology.

The Government Stationery stores located at Rajaji Salai, Chennai-01 is functioning with 70 employees including Deputy Director, Assistant Director (Stationery Procurement), Assistant Works Manager, Administrative Staff, Technical Employees and Mazdoors.
The Government Stationery Stores, Chennai-1 functions as a centralized distribution agency for all Government departments / Government Offices, including the Secretariat. It supplies various types of papers, copier papers, file pads and act as procuring agency for procuring papers for Printing forms and registers, in accordance with tender transparency act of 1998 and 2000.
Stationery articles and papers are supplied at free of cost to 4021 Government Offices and officer of the Hon'ble Governor, Hon'ble Chief Minister, Hon'ble Ministers, Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission, Election Commission, Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, Court etc., in accordance with their respective indents.
In addition, Stationery items are supplied on payment basis to 67 Offices like ESI Hospital and other such related Government Institutions. Stationery articles required for the smooth conduct of General Elections and By-Election to the Parliament, State Assembly and Local body Elections are procured by this department and distributed to all District Collectors' offices.
This Branch Press at K.Pudur, Madurai - 7 is operational in its own building since its inception in 1976. It has a total Strength of 212 employees including a Deputy Works Manager, two Assistant Works Managers, Assistant Director, Administrative Staff, Technical Employees and Mazdoors.
A Sub-depot at this branch press, function, in the similar line of Publication depot at Chennai.
The Branch Press of Salem functioning in Gugai area of Salem from since 1966, was shifted to its own building at SIDCO Industrial Estate Five Roads Salem in 1986. It functions under the control of a Branch Manager in the cadre of Deputy Works Manager with 110 staff.
Pudukkottai Branch Press, the oldest press next only to Central Press was established in 1861 in Pudukkottai. The Deputy Works Manager is the Branch Officer and there are 77 Staff under her administrative control.
In the year 1965, Branch Press of Trichy was Initiated at the Ariyamangalam Industrial Estate was subsequently shifted to its own building at the SIDCO Campus, Thuvakudi, in 1990. The Branch Manager in the cadre of Deputy Works Manager, under whose administrative control administrative staff, technical employees and mazdoors totalling to 96 are working.
A Government Publications sub-depot is functioning at the branch press to facilitate and enable the people of the central and southern districts of Tamil Nadu to Publish their change of name in Tamil Nadu Government Gazettes.
This Branch Press was commissioned in 1966 is now operational in its own building since 1981, and is headed by a Deputy Works Manager. Totally 84 employees are working in the Press.
The Government Publications Sales Depots is functioning within the campus of the Commissionerate of Stationery and Printing Chennai-2 and is headed by a Assistant Director (Publications), Government Gazettes, Service Register, Law reports, Court, Manuals, Telephone Directories of the Government Offices and other Gazettes are being sold to Public in this Depot Government Publications Sales Depot is also functioning as an agent for selling Indian Government Publications
The change of Name in Tamil is published at a cost of Rs.150/- Whereas in English it is published at a cost of Rs.750/-. The change of Name regarding the Transgender is published as a notification free of cost.
